It covers a great area at the end of old city side of Galata Bridge with its impressive image. Its construction was started by Valide Sultan Safiyer, mother of Sultan II. Mehmet in year 1597.Oğlunun ölümüyle gücünü kaybeden Valide Sultan who had lost her power with the death of her son couldn’t have finished her mosque. It had been finished by mother of IV. Mehmet Hatice Turhan who was another Valide Sultan in year 1663. Turhan Sultan had died in year 1682 and her funeral was buried in the courtyard of the mosque which was completed by her.
